I remember a story about a very wealthy man who took his son on a trip to show him how poor people live. They spend a couple of days and nights in a very poor family upcountry. And once the father was satisfied that the young boy had finaly understood poverty, they departed for the city.
On the way back, the father asked his son, "So, what did you learn from the trip?" The son posed for a moment and answered, " I saw that we have one dog, but they have four. We have imported lights in our garden, but they have the stars to light the night. Our verandah only reaches the front yard, but they have the whole horizon to themselves. We have servants to serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls and electric fence around our property, but the have friends to protect them."
With this the boy,s father was speechless. Then his son added." Thanks, Dad, for showing me how poor we are."
Life is about perspective. Und so auch, wenn man sich auf den Weg macht neue Länder, Menschen und Dinge zu erkunden.
